  • I am a doer/multitasker: Protect Folsom's quality of life, monitor all aspects of development, protect the river front
  • Minimize water concerns, discourage site development south of White Rock Road, improve traffic

There’s a need to elect persons to the Folsom City Council who do more than talk a good game. I am a conservative politician. I believe in personal responsibility on finances and the importance that you live within your means. You have to have a practice and not waiver in honesty, integrity, dedication, and be consistent to be in politics in the right way. In addition, there is no substitution for experience that comes from hard work.

What if Folsom produced the leaders of the future? What if the children of Folsom grew up to care about community, & commerce, growth & traditions? What if those individuals stepped forward to listen, to learn & to lead? I'm here today to announce that it will & indeed, it already has! This is why I’m running.

I represent homegrown leadership. My background is uniquely suited to serve our city. I was RAISED in Folsom. I care about Folsom, both issues we’ve faced previously, & those we'll face in the future. I'm an entrepreneur, Utility Commissioner, father, volunteer coach & professional security expert. I’m just one of the first who like me, will step forward & lead Folsom into the future. I envision a city that honors its unique history & positions itself as a city of the future. Folsom is that city.

When elected, I will help create a transparent government that will include all stakeholders while avoiding any conflicts of interest, like we see today. I'll level set with South of 50 shareholders, ensuring the development process benefits both North & South of 50; including the water issues. I’ll ensure Folsom has a smart growth agenda, not a growth for growth sake agenda. This includes eliminating the close ties between our elected officials, & outside influences who use the Chamber of Commerce PAC as a financing tool to prop up certain candidates. We'll do this by introducing a vote to amend our city charter, adding term limits, & a voted mayor. I’ll focus on updating Folsom’s social/ technological footprint, bringing Folsom initiatives, directly to residents. This includes streamlining online business permits, citywide social media platforms & real time info via status updates from the city. My goal is to attract what I call “foundation employers” like Intel to Folsom. I’ll work with these campus style companies to organically produce higher paying jobs from within Folsom. Our unemployment rate is indeed low, however it's made up of lower wage, retail based jobs which doesn’t produce enough earnings to live in Folsom.

Picture the town you grew up in, picture going back to the elementary school you went too. It holds a special value to you. Folsom is that city for me. It has a special place in my heart. I represent Folsom's youth who grew up to get involved!

  • Public spaces tighten that connection that each of us has to our city and neighbors. I believe that the creation of a river district would provide value to every resident and business in Folsom.
  • I will work with Folsom Lake College to partner with a four-year university to offer baccalaureate degrees similar to what has been done in many other innovative cities.
  • Technology embedded throughout Folsom will make our environment more efficient in terms of land use, energy reductions, transportation, and government processes. I am the candidate with expertise in technology and can lead this effort.

My name is Chad Vander Veen. I’ve lived in Folsom since 2003. Prior to that I grew up in the small Southern California city of Yucaipa – literally the eastern most edge of greater Los Angeles. I am the middle of three brothers and came from a mostly happy home. While my parents did divorce when I was a teenager, they did a pretty good job raising three relatively well adjusted boys.

I spent most of my childhood outdoors with my best friend Tim. We could often be found riding dirt bikes, making home movies or building bike ramps the likes of which I’d never consider letting my kids use. I attended nearby Redlands Christian School until ninth grade. From there I went to Yucaipa High School where I was a good student and mediocre baseball player.

After high school I went to the University of Redlands (left). Like many of us, the future course of my life began to take shape in college. At Redlands I was able to experience some incredible things. I spent half of my junior year in Europe. I received a degree in government and, most importantly, I met my future wife.

It was because of Alison that I found my way to the Sacramento area. While she attended grad school in San Francisco, I moved to Sacramento in 2001. When she graduated in 2003 we got engaged and bought a small house on Ruth Court in Folsom. We lived there for 10 years and had two amazing children, Eoin (8) and Calvin (5).

Alison went to work at Kaiser and I eventually found a job writing about government for Folsom-based e.Republic. I spent 10 years at e.Republic, eventually running a magazine and website called FutureStructure. FutureStructure is all about building smart cities that are well-prepared to manage future challenges. I learned a tremendous amount about what the best run cities in the world are doing today and what they intend to do in the years ahead.

A lot of my writing covered cities and sustainability. When the worst of the drought hit, I researched and wrote a great deal about water. Last year, I decided rather than merely writing about water conservation, I’d do something about it and took a job with Purchase Green – a fantastic company that manufactures artificial grass and helps homeowners save hundreds of thousands of gallons of water.

In my spare time I enjoy coaching youth sports, exercising, playing softball and bowling. I’m currently a coach for Folsom Soccer Club. This past spring I was an assistant coach for the Folsom National League AA Champion Brewers.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know about me, please leave a comment or send me an email at c_vanderveen@yahoo.com. I’d love to hear from you!
