Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (1)

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools.  What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?
Answer from Carmine S. Forcina:

Parents/staff and the community need to have a full understanding of the new funding formula for schools so that their participation in site/district LCAP's (Loacal Control Accoutability Plan) is meaningful. In additiona to the steps already taken to educate and provide information I plan to increase our use of social media as another learning tool. Currently, information is sent home to parents in their primary language, posted on site/district websites, meetings are held at school sites, and meeting attendance for learing is encoruage by the teacher.

Summary

I plan to cover the subject of program offering and school choice.

It is important for students to have quality curriculm, coupled with quality teaching. Of equal importance is that students have the opportunity to explore areas of interest or have opportunities to be exposed to learning areas they may not have previously investigated. Elk Grove Unified School District has a rich diversity of programs in high school through our pathway and career academies. Over 40 programs are offered at our nine comprehensive high schools and at our alternative schools. Students can pursue learning in green energy, engineering, building trades, culinary arts, visual and perfoming arts, technology and aninmation, just to mention a few.  Parents are also given the opportunity of open enrollment further expanding the choice they and their child have to pursue their education. For those students not choosing to enroll in a pathway or career academey there is a full compliment of A-G courses, advanced plancement, honors, AVID and general courses aimed at ensuring that each child is career and college prepared. As a member of the Board of Education it has been my responsibility to ensure  a rich diversity of program while maintaining the ficsal health of the District. I promise the voter's in my previous election to focus on many areas requiring change and imporovement and I kept each of those promises. When I am re-elected I will continue with my Board colleagues in furthering the programs available for children, maintaining our fiscal health, expanding parent/community involvement and continue with successful efforts aimed at eliminating the achievement gap.

Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (1)

A recent law made major changes in the way that the state allocates funding to schools.  What will you do to ensure that the public understands your local control formula for school spending and your plan to measure outcomes?
Answer from Nikita Kostyuk:

I will work tirelessly to inform parents and voters of their school site LCAP meetings. I will fight to make sure the information from these meetings will be available to the public in an easily accessible and transparent manner. I will push staff to do more public outreach to families and bring in technology to allow for direct access to information and simple, effective communication with local constituents.
