Political Beliefs

My goal is to support the students, teachers, and community members, and to make sure that they have a voice in the community college system.

I am hearing from residents that students are taking many years to complete coursework that should be able to be completed in just a couple of years.  The students aren't able to get into the classes they need, or courses are only offered certain terms.  Some students have a lot of remedial work to do and end up with many units, but not in the classes they need in order to transfer.

I would like to get a plan in place for students so that they know exactly what classes they need to take what term.  I also want to make sure that the classes are available so that working students or those with families can fit them into their schedules.  A lot of students who go to community colleges are the first to attend college or do not have support at home.  Some don't know how to navigate the educational system, so it is important they get the support they need.

Community support is also important to the success of a school.  We need to engage the community and do everything we can to make sure the students are able to succeed.  This might mean that we need to recruit more teachers, especially in certain vocational areas where finding a teacher is more difficult.  The students need those classes to be available to them!

We also need to make sure that we keep costs low for students so that everyone who wants to attend is able to attend.  With costs rising all the time, it is not easy, but I will fight to keep costs down.

I am not a politician- I am a teacher in the Elk Grove Unified School District and have leadership experience.  I have also owned a successful local small business.  Thank you for your consideration!

My Top 3 Priorities

  • I want to improve the completion ratio of students who enroll in the Los Rios Community Colleges, currently fewer than 23% of enrollees complete their coursework, certification, degree, or transfer to a four-year university.
  • Expand and improve outreach and support to the underserved communities, especially the poor, homeless, parolees, and disenfranchised in our district
  • To create avenues of "inreach" among the various campuses and satellite centers including, but not limited to: full-time and adjunct instructors, and staff regarding student and community need.

Biography

I am married and my wife and I have two children and five grandchildren. We’ve lived in the Elk Grove area for the past twenty years. Over that time I have been very involved in the Elk Grove and South County area.

My community involvement has been primarily in supporting the youth. I serve as President of the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation. This organization recognizes local high school seniors for their academic achievements. In 2016 the Foundation awarded over $201,000. I am very involved with the Elk Grove School District and serve on a host of committees.

I am the past president of the Neighborhood Accountability Board working with youth offenders with Sacramento County Probation. I am the past District Chair for the Soaring Eagle District with the Boy Scouts of America.

I believe in the Community College system and especially in the outstanding Los Rios Community College District. Community colleges play an important role in job training, re-entry training and as an effective and affordable gateway to higher education.

I will work to continue and keep Los Rios Community College District a leader for the California Community College system and would appreciate your vote and support.
